Zocor is a medicine to clean blood vessels from the excessive amount of cholesterol. It has the active ingredient Simvastatin.
The medical studies have shown an efficiency of Zocor as to the reduction of the general cholesterol level in the blood plasma, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The mechanism of the pharmacological action consists in the inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase enzyme which takes part in biosynthesis of cholesterol.
A noticed therapeutic effect is observed within 2 weeks of the use, the maximal therapeutic effect is within 4-6 weeks after the beginning of the treatment. In case of the prolonged use of Zocor, the therapeutic effect is increased. In 2 months of the treatment, a significant reduction of the bad cholesterol happens, and lumen in the blood vessels is increased.
After the use of Zocor, the cholesterol concentration returns to the original value, and therefore, this medicine is prescribed for a long therapeutic course during severe forms of atherosclerosis.
Directions for the use
Zocor is prescribed patients with increased risk of the development of the cardiovascular diseases, especially during the increased cholesterol level:
in combination with medical course of Zocor, patients are recommended to follow a special low-calorie diet and a consumption of food which low amount of the vegetable and animal fats.
Usage and dosage of Zocor
The tablets of Zocor are used once per day regardless of the size of the daily dose. It is better to take the medicine in the evening because more amount of cholesterol is produced in the evening and at night. The medicine can be used regardless of meals.
The dosage regimen is indicated individually depending on the original values of the cholesterol level in the patient’s blood.
The dose adjustment is possible during the treatment depending on the reaction to the use and efficiency of the therapy. The dose should be changed not more than once per 3-4 weeks.
The length of the treatment depends on the individual peculiarities of the medical image and can take 3 to 12 months.
Patients may have light side effects during the use of Zocor: discomfort in the area of the stomach, nausea, diarrhea, feeling of the general weakness, headache, and spasms.
In general, Zocor therapy is well tolerated. In order to lower the probability of the side effects, the treatment begins from the low doses and the dose of Zocor is gradually increased up to the optimal level.
Contraindications for the use
Patients with chronic diabetes, dysfunction of kidneys should take this medicine with caution.
Zocor is not recommended during the breast feeding. If the cholesterol level should be reduced in the blood, the breast-feeding is stopped and the treatment begins.
