Zoloft is one of the most promising drugs for the treatment of the depression and anxious disorders. It contains the active ingredient Sertraline. It has a high efficiency compared to the efficiency of the treatment with tricyclic antidepressants but it has better tolerance and higher risk-benefit profile.
Zoloft is serotonin reuptake inhibitor. It restores natural biochemical processes which happen in the brain and central nervous system. In case of the increased serotonin level (feel-good chemicals), it is possible to lower the depression symptoms in a short time: sadness, bad mood, negative thoughts, concern, fear, and others.
Besides the treatment of the depression, Zoloft helps to regulate a sleeping cycle. This medicine is very effective in the treatment of a drowsiness, a pathologic sleep disorder which often goes with depression. Sertraline does not influence on the concentration of dopamine and noradrenaline, and therefore it does not cause psychostimulating action and seldom causes suicidal thoughts.
The main advantage of Zoloft is absence of the medical addiction during the prolonged use. It is conditioned by the optimal period of half-life of the active ingredients from the systemic blood flow. Antidepressants are often excreted from the blood within 2-3 days, and this can lead to the development of the medical addiction. But it does not happen with Zoloft because the action of the single dose coincides with half-life of Sertraline from the body.
Directions for the use
Zoloft is prescribed for the treatment and prophylaxis of the depressive disorders which go with anxiety, fear, apathy, lack of energy, somatic disorders, and sleepiness.
The medicine can be used for the treatment of the obsessive-compulsory disorders, and also for the prevention of the panic states during the anxious disturbances.
In what dose is Zoloft used?
A period of half-life of Sertraline from the blood plasma is 26 hours, and therefore a single dose per day will be the most optimal solution. A risk of accumulation and a development of the dose-dependent side effects are completely eliminated. The action period of Zoloft is perfect from the viewpoint of the pharmacological efficiency and safety.
The duration of the use of Zoloft during the depressive state is usually 6-8 weeks. However, the treatment can be longer during the severe anxious, panic disorders or depression. If the depression treatment, the therapy is started from the use of Zoloft 50 mg once per day, in the morning, before breakfast. The daily dose can be gradually increased up to 200 mg Zoloft per day (by 50 mg every week) within the first 2-3 weeks.
Due to the high pharmacological safety, Zoloft can be used by children at the age of 12 to 17. In this case, the treatment begins from the minimal dose of Zoloft 25 mg per day, and the daily dose is gradually increased controlling the body reaction to the treatment.
Zoloft side effects
There is a list of the side effects which are peculiar for all antidepressants, and Zoloft is not an exception. Therefore, using this medicine, you should be ready for the development of some side effects: dry mouth, poor appetite, rapid heartbeat, dyspepsia, excitement, flushes, dizziness, and headache.
In single cases, the symptoms of the anxiety can be increased during the first week, and suicidal thoughts can occur. A patient should be controlled during this period, and the daily dose may be lowered up to 25 mg.
